Weekly Buzz… May 21-27

Welcome Deborah We are delighted to welcome our new Education Manager, Deborah McArthur to the Museum staff. If you run into her around the Museum, make sure to say hello.

Sign up for Art & Nature Explorer’s Camp There’s still time to make some last minute summer plans for your kids. We’ll be offering this special day camp from June 20-24. Bees starting to leave the hive. Within a few minutes there was a massive cluster of bees clinging to the side of the building.

Bees on the move Our bee colony decided to swarm this afternoon! The demonstration hive was briefly vacated as the bees flew outside and gathered on a tree in Pilkington Creek. After about an hour, however, most of them had returned to the hive while the rest of them clustered on the outside of the Museum, surrounding the entrance to their hive. Our beekeeper, Jeff Perez, was able to come observe and explain what was happening. At this point we can’t predict what the bees will do, but it looks like they’re going to stay for now. They might swarm again, but if they do, half of the colony might remain here to continue raising their young.

Earth Day Class Project Challenge Reception Earlier this week we held a reception to honor the winners of the Earth Day Class Project Challenge. Students from Gault Elementary School, Mount Madonna School, and Tierra Pacifica Charter School were on hand to give presentations about their projects. Watch for photos and details about the winning projects in our next member newsletter.

Surfing Museum 25th Anniversary Our staff had a chance to visit our friends at the Surfing Museum today to help celebrate this special anniversary. The event featured ceremonies with Mayor Ryan Coonerty, original Santa Cruz Surfing Club member Harry Mayo and other special guests. Attendees also enjoyed a display of classic woody cars by Santa Cruz Woodies and an impressive cake shaped like a longboard standing upright in the sand.

Only one week left to see The Art of Nature If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, come by the Museum to see this annual exhibit of natural science illustrations. The Art of Nature will be closing on June 4 to make way for the upcoming Endangered Neighbors exhibit, so don’t miss out.
