Weekly Buzzz… April 2-8, 2011

The Art of Nature Opening and Illustration Demonstration Museum volunteers and staff have spent the week working alongside artists from the Northern California Guild of Natural Science Illustrators to install our 22nd annual scientific illustration exhibit, The Art of Nature. The exhibit opens to the public tomorrow – to celebrate we’ll be featuring a demonstration of scientific illustration techniques by two of the artists featured in the show, Megan Gnekow and Krista Annandakutten, from noon until 2pm this Saturday, April 9. If you can’t make it this weekend, be sure to stop by before the exhibit ends on June 4.

Thank You Thursday Stop by Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing this week and help a good cause! On Thursday April 14, from noon-10pm, $1 from every pint sold will benefit the Museum. Invite all of your friends and have some fun while you help us raise funds.

Volunteer Gardening Day Join us on Friday April 15, 10am-noon to help weed the Garden Learning Center and take some time to admire this month’s blooms. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a peek at some flowers on our unusual white Douglas iris. All are welcome, no experience required. Meet in the garden on the east side of the Museum. Rain cancels (we’re hoping for sunshine since we’ve had to cancel several months in a row!). If we get rained out, we’ll move the work day to April 22.

Sign up now for our spring wildflower walk Join us on Saturday, April 23 at 10am for Exploring the Santa Cruz Sandhills: Wildflower Season. Many of you visited this special ecosystem with us in January and enthusiastically requested that we offer another hike during wildflower season. We are happy to offer you this special opportunity to learn more about the flora of the Sandhills with ecologist Jodi McGraw. Don’t miss this chance to visit a local treasure that is normally closed to the public. Pre-registration required; open to ages 10 & up; cost is $8/members, $10/general. For more information and to register, please visit our website.
